The first leg of Scott's journey starts at the Golden Gate Bridge and ends in Portland, OR. Along the way, Scott will mostly stick to the coastal highways (the 1 and the 101), though some detours further inland are inevitable. On this leg and throughout the trip, Scott will take "rest days" during which he'll ride more, but without a 70 pound trailer and with knobby tires.
